How to Overcome Mattress Sticker Shock

At Sit ‘n Sleep, our goal is to help Southern Californians lead happier and healthier lives by improving the quality of their sleep. To help us accomplish this, we had the San Francisco-based market research company Survata conduct a survey of more than 500 Californians who are 18 years of age or older to learn more about their mattress buying habits and preferences. The results of the survey, along with a few comments from Sit ‘n Sleep store managers and Sleep Consultants, are summarized below. Some of their findings were quite surprising.

People Who Have Never Purchased a Mattress and Why

The survey revealed that although the average respondent has purchased 3.5 mattresses during his or her lifetime, and 45% of them report having made their first purchase before the age of 24. However, almost half of those surveyed (48%) had never purchased even a single mattress. What’s more, over 20% of those who hadn’t bought a mattress indicated they’d never even considered buying one. Among the reasons given were sleeping on hand-me-downs, futons or air mattresses, but the number one reason for not having bought a mattress is that they simply assumed mattresses were too expensive. Evidently, they haven’t visited Sit ‘n Sleep.

Here’s what the manager of one of Sit ‘n Sleep’s Southern California brick and mortar locations had to say when asked why so many people think that mattresses cost too much:

“At Sit ‘n Sleep, every day is a sale day. People who assume shopping at a mattress discounter like Sit ‘n Sleep is expensive obviously haven’t visited one of our 38 mattress superstores. We’ll beat any competitor’s advertised price. Set-ups are always free, there’s free local delivery on purchases of $399 or more, and we won’t charge you to haul away your old mattress, frame and foundation. What’s more, our financing options can’t be beat, even if you have less than perfect credit. ”

How Often do People Replace Their Mattresses?

The largest group of respondents (43%) indicated they buy a new mattress every 5 to 10 years, while 13% replace their mattress more often than every 5 years. Over 40% of those who replied to the survey reported keeping their mattresses for more than 10 years. Amazingly, 10% of them indicated they have been sleeping on the same mattress for 20 years or more. It was also surprising to learn that two-thirds of people who have kept their mattresses for over 10 years say they’re still happy sleeping on it, while the remaining one-third indicated dissatisfaction with their present sleep system.

How Often Should Your Mattress be Replaced?

Sit ‘n Sleep’s City of Commerce mattress store and clearance center manager Joe Shaw says, “The life of a mattress varies based on the habits of individual sleepers. If your mattress is more than eight years old, it’s definitely time to have it replaced for health reasons, as well as sleeping comfort. All Sit ‘n Sleep locations have Sleep Consultants on duty who are always available to help shoppers choose a mattress that’s the right size, type and comfort level for their individual situation.”

Jack Armstrong, a Sleep Consultant at Sit ‘n Sleep’s Culver City location, pointed out that anyone who’s been sleeping on the same mattress for more than eight years will be amazed at the advances in mattress comfort and support that have been made in recent years. Armstrong went on to say that after testing one of the quality mattresses from manufacturers like TEMPUR-PedicSealySerta and other well-known brands available at Sit ‘n Sleep, that worn and tired old mattress they’ve been sleeping on will never feel the same to them again.sleep myths

How Much are People Willing to Pay for a New Mattress?

The Servata survey concluded that slightly more than half (51%) of the respondents would be reluctant to pay more than $500 for a new mattress. Of the remaining half, 32% would be comfortable paying between $500 and $1,500. On the high end, there were a few respondents who would be willing to spend $4,500 or more to replace their old mattress. Here’s the full breakdown:

  • Less than $500 – 51.0%
  • $500 to $1,499 – 32.4%
  • $1,500 to $2,499 – 6.7%
  • $2,500 to $3,499 – 2.8%
  • $3,500 to $4,499 – 1.0%
  • $4,500 or more – 6.1%

Brad Jones, another Sit ‘n Sleep store manager had this to say after seeing the survey results: “Our everyday low prices and huge selection of quality mattresses means all 38 Sit ‘n Sleep superstores have the right mattress for all body types at prices to fit just about any budget, regardless of how small.”

Sit ‘n Sleep carries a huge selection of quality name brand mattresses in sizes from Twin to California King, in comfort levels ranging from ultra-plush to extra firm, at prices starting below $300. In addition to the huge sales with deeply discounted prices on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and other major holidays, every day’s a sale day at Sit ‘n Sleep. Our online only specials offer savings that simply can’t be matched anywhere else. What’s more, we’ll beat any competitor’s advertised price for the same brand and model.

What Keeps People from Replacing Their Old Mattresses?

The majority of those who took part in the survey (56.5%) said price was the primary reason for not buying a new mattress, while 15.6% delayed replacing their mattress because they felt shopping for mattresses was inconvenient. The remaining 27.9% cited other undisclosed reasons for postponing their purchase. Susan Keller, another Sit ‘n Sleep store manager, points out that “Whether it’s online or in one of our superstores, shopping for a mattress at Sit ‘n Sleep is fast, easy and affordable, and it’s also convenient. No matter where you live in Southern California, there’s a Sit ‘n Sleep nearby that’s open 7 days a week. Sit ‘n Sleep believes in providing great customer service, which is why trained and knowledgeable Sleep Consultants are always available to answer customers’ questions and help them select a mattress that’s the right size and comfort level. We plan to use what we learned from the survey to provide our customers with an even greater selection of quality mattresses and sleep related products.”

Buying a Mattress Online

Almost 70% of the survey’s participants bought their last mattress from a mattress specialty store or big box retailer. Of these, less than 10% were purchased from an online retailer, despite the convenience and sometimes lower prices that can be found online. When asked hypothetically what would cause them to buy their next mattress online, 37% said convenience, 34% replied price and 21% felt they could find a wider range of choices online. Sit ‘n Sleep offers the best of both worlds, since shoppers can visit a nearby retail outlet, speak with a Sleep Consultant, test various mattresses and still take advantage of Sit ‘n Sleep’s online only specials by logging on the Internet and ordering at home.

Sit ‘n Sleep makes buying a new mattress simple. For more than 40 years, we’ve been providing consumers with quality mattresses, bedding and accessories at unbeatable prices. All About Latex Mattresses

Latex technology has come a long way since its newfound popularity in the mid nineteenth century. Now, even Latex mattresses are made using advanced technological processes and techniques.

Latex mattresses are ideal for allergy-sufferers in that Latex mattresses are naturally dust mite, bed bug, bacteria, mildew and mold resistant. Standard innerspring mattresses can be covered using a mattress protector or mattress cover, but regular mattresses are the perfect habitat for dust mites. Latex and memory foam, however, are not.

One big difference between regular mattresses and Latex mattresses is that Latex mattresses get warmer than regular mattresses and are great for keeping warm on cool nights. When purchasing your new Latex (and Memory foam too) mattress keep in mind that homes in higher altitudes, and climates that vary drastically are subjected to varying Latex firmness. In high altitude, many Memory foam and Latex foam mattresses get very firm because their natural properties react to body heat in order to allow for complete conformability.

Many find that there is one major advantage of a Latex mattress over regular innerspring mattresses.

Latex mattresses offer pressure-relieving support in areas most mattresses cannot.

Latex mattresses conform to the curves in your body and disperse your weight evenly across the surface of the bed. If you are a sensitive sleeper, easily awakened by the movements of your partner, a Latex mattress can be an easy way to eliminate disruptive movements.

There are different types of Latex and different levels of firmness. You will find, in the mattress description, numbers that refer to firmness of Latex foam. Latex foam firmness, referred to as ILD, comes in four comfort levels. The higher the ILD rating, the firmer the foam will be. For example ILD 11 is considered very soft, Plush foam, whereas ILD 50 is a very Firm, supportive foam.

Latex mattresses can be made in different ways and from different types of Latex. Here are a few different types of Latex used in mattresses.

  • Dunlop: The most common method of making Latex. Often cheaper than Talalay
  • Talalay: Another common method of making Latex, offers less dense Latex. Considered a more Premium Latex
  • Natural Latex: More expensive as it is harder to harvest.
  • Blended Latex: Chemicals are added to promote a consistent feel.
  • Synthetic Latex: A synthetic material that acts like Latex.

In comparison to Memory foam, Latex mattresses offer a springier, quick release for comfort. Also, a big difference is that Latex mattresses are not as sensitive to temperature change, whereas Memory Foam mattress rely on and retain body heat to remain soft and malleable.

Dust Mites, Allergies, And Your Mattress

Do you Wake up in the Morning Itching, Wheezing and Sneezing?

Most likely it’s because you’ve got unwelcome company living in your mattress. You may think you’re getting your 40 winks alone or with your sleeping partner, but in the recesses of your older mattress, box spring and pillows you are being joined by a happy family of millions of dust mites. Unfortunately, these critters are actually the cause of many indoor allergies in both children and adults alike. Indoor allergies, especially those that emanate from your mattress, can have a profoundly negative effect on your sleep and overall health. But, the good news is that there are many easy remedies for indoor allergies caused by the dust mites in your home furnishings.

How Common are Dust Mites?

Dust mites can be found in nearly every home, including yours. The American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology approximates that 10 percent of Americans exhibit allergies due to dust mites. Like bed bugs, mites prefer warm temperatures and love the warmth, moisture and plentiful food supply in your mattress.

Because dust mites feed on human and animal skin flakes, a mattress is the perfect home for mites.

It is estimated that humans shed about 1/5 ounce of dead skin each week. This is why it is extremely important to wash your sheets every two weeks and replace pillows that are more than a year old. This can reduce the risk of infestation.

Why are they Called Dust Mites?

Dust mites get their name because a large percentage of dust particles come from microscopic particles of dust mite skin and feces. This is a very common cause of indoor allergies. It has been estimated that dust mites play a role in around 60% of asthma, eczema and hay fever cases. Although some individuals are predisposed to dust mite allergies, allergies can develop in any person over time and should you start to see symptoms of indoor allergies, it is wise to speak to your physician.

How Can I Combat Dust Mite Allergies?

Indoor allergies can, and are often the cause of sleep disturbances and there’s no reason you shouldn’t be getting the sleep you deserve. Manufacturers now cater to individuals with allergies by offering mattresses made with latex instead of cotton. Latex mattresses are naturally resistant because of their density and hypo-allergenic make-up and have been found to relieve the symptoms associated with allergies related to dust mites. Speak to your neighborhood Sit ‘n Sleep Sleep Consultant more about this issue today!

How To Protect Your Mattress

donate mattress

At Sit ‘n Sleep, we’re always stressing the importance of a good night’s sleep. We are continuously trying to keep the public aware of the dangers of dust mites and how a good sleep health not only can help you stay thin but can help improve your on-the-job performance as well. Another important aspect of sleep health is ensuring that you have a clean, healthy sleep surface and that your bed is adequately protected from pesky parasites (dust mites, bed bugs) and allergens. The best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and your mattress is by having a quality mattress protector.

What Does a Mattress Protector Do?

Mattress protectors are a must for every bed, regardless of its size or the materials from which it’s constructed. A good mattress protector will be made of a thin, breathable fabric like polyurethane to keep the mattress cool, prevent bunching and make sure it’s a quiet surface on which to sleep. Mattress protectors are great at preventing dust mites and bed bugs because they keep the inside of the mattress from accumulating human oils and skin flakes (their major food supply), sealing off the bed altogether. Mattress protectors can also benefit children and the elderly by preventing the mattress from being stained.

Is Your Mattress Making You Fat?

You’ve probably heard that not getting enough sleep is bad for you. But did you know that losing sleep might also be causing you to gain weight? Recent medical studies are repeatedly finding a connection between sleep duration and weight gain. You can read below more about how sleep affects weight, but first we’d like to offer you some serious savings on your next mattress.

At Sit ‘n Sleep, we’re dedicated to making sure Southern Californians get the best sleep possible. If it’s time to replace your old, uncomfortable mattress (which could be causing you to gain weight!) we’re here to help. We hope you’ll take advantage of our unbelievable selection and unbeatable prices.

And now back to the sleep/weight connection: A study presented last year at the American Thoracic Society’s Annual Conference by Dr. Arn Eliasson shows that getting more sleep helps you lose inches around the waistline. In Eliasson’s study, nurses at Walter Reid Army Hospital who slept more hours a night or “long sleepers” had an average Body Mass Index (BMI) of 24.5 compared to “short sleepers” whose average BMI was 28.3. BMI for normal weight is 18.5 – 24.9 and for overweight people, 25 – 29.9. Dr Eliasson attributed the “short sleepers” higher body mass to the fact that lack of sleep disrupts natural hormonal balances, triggering overeating.

Not getting enough sleep thanks to an old, lumpy mattress? It could actually be causing you to pack on extra pounds.

In a world full of fad diets where what’s great for you one day is terrible for you the next, there has only been one constant truth – a healthy diet and exercise will make you lose weight. You never can go wrong if you eat sensibly, control your portions, and get about 30 minutes of exercise a day. But, recent research does more than plainly suggest there should be a third component added to the diet and exercise equation. People who are looking to lose or maintain their current weight have to get a good night’s sleep as well!

Mounting scientific evidence shows that people who sleep 7.5 – 8 hours a night weigh less and lose weight easier than those who only get 5 hours of sleep a night.

Lack of a proper amount of sleep creates a hormone imbalance in the body which leads to overeating according to a recent study by Eve Van Cauter, a researcher at the University of Chicago. Two hormones, Leptin and Ghrelin – referred to by Cauter as “the yin and yang of hunger” – are affected by the amount of sleep one gets. “One is the accelerator for eating (Ghrelin), and the other is the brake (Leptin).”

Leptin is the hormone that tells us when we’re full. When it is working correctly, it suppresses our appetite.

Ghrelin is the hormone that tells us we need more food to keep our energy up.

When we don’t get enough sleep, both Leptin and Ghrelin get thrown out of whack. Leptin goes down, making us feel less satisfied – even when we’ve had enough food. Ghrelin goes up, stimulating our appetite.

Van Cauter’s research, which was conducted on normal weight men, found that when the men only slept for four hours a night, leptin levels were 18% lower and ghrelin levels were 28% higher after they slept four hours. These findings show hormonal reasons why a lack of sleep can lead to overeating.

Another study from the University of Chicago compared the calorie intake of people who slept 5.5 hours a day versus those who slept 8.5 hours a day.

The study found that the sleepy eaters consumed on average 221 calories a day more than those who slept over eight hours. insomniac

The extra 221 calories a day could translate to a weight gain of over a pound of fat every two weeks!

The hormonal change that occurs when Leptin levels lower and Ghrelin levels rise lead the body not to just crave more food, but foods high in fat and carbohydrates.

Why is it that people are overweight due to a lack of sleep? Is it the busy American lifestyle, stress or just plain staying up at night and watching the late show? The one thing people may be overlooking is their mattress. If you have an old mattress that’s losing its shape, it could be making you out of shape. A poor-quality mattress that’s unsuited to your body type is guaranteed to reduce the amount and quality of your sleep. Staying up all night tossing and turning on a 12-year-old mattress that might be too small or too firm will cause your body’s internal processes to function sub-optimally. This in turn can lead to weight gain despite your best efforts to stay fit.

On the other hand, a new mattress that provides proper support for the spine, lower back and neck can help people sleep through the night without tossing and turning.

If you are having a hard time getting the proper amount of sleep to maintain a healthy and attractive weight, the problem could be what lies beneath you every night — your mattress.

These days, the magic equation to weight loss isn’t just watching what you eat and getting off the couch, it’s diet, exercise and sleep. How much sleep should you get each night to lose weight or maintain your ideal weight? The tried-and-true time of eight hours a night is exactly what you need to maintain a healthy weight. These three lifestyle changes work well together, too. Exercise during the day helps you fall asleep at night and not eating too much helps you exercise as well as sleep soundly. And at the day, literally, sound sleep starts — where else — with your mattress!

Everything You Need to Know About Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses made using memory foam were introduced to the public in 2008. They were developed as a result of complaints from customers that coil and foam systems alone didn’t provide the level of comfort needed for sound, uninterrupted sleep.

Hybrid mattresses combine the support, strength and bounce of conventional innerspring mattresses with the softness and comfort of foam, latex or gel sleep systems. Many sleepers find these combinations to be ideal for consistently getting a good night’s rest and awakening relaxed, refreshed and ready to take on the day.

One in three people are allergic to dust mite waste so it’s no secret why they’re the leading cause of household allergies. If your mattress is over eight years old, chances are it’s filled with millions of these tiny creatures. That’s why at Sit ‘n Sleep we always say if it’s over eight, it’s time to replace!

How to Keep Your Mattress Dust-Mite Free

What Type Of Mattress Is Best For You

is my mattress too soft

Being that each of us has a unique body type there is no one perfect mattress that works for everyone. Although there are mattresses constructed with higher quality materials and better fabrics that Sit ‘n Sleep recommends over lesser-quality items, when it comes to levels of support and feel, it’s really all about what’s best for the individual.

Soft vs. Firm

Are you looking for a firm mattress that offers maximum support or a soft mattress that has more of a cradling effect? If you’re not sure, you’re not alone. Lying on a mattress in the store for a few minutes on a showroom floor just isn’t enough time to determine whether it’s the type of support you’ll need for the next eight years. As a rule of thumb, larger individuals tend to choose a firmer mattress because they better support a larger build. Smaller individuals should try softer mattresses because they don’t have as much weight to displace. Also, if you find you have chronic back pain, a firmer mattress may help relieve pressure from the hips and lower back.

Which support system is right for you?

By far the most popular choice, the innerspring mattress has a spring zone in the bottom and atop it a comfort layer that can be made from various foams and fibers. The type of materials used in the comfort layer determines the firmness of the mattress. For the innerspring system, coils can either be individually wrapped which reduces the amount of motion transferred between coils or open coils which transfer more motion and tend to wear more quickly. Many brands make hybrid mattresses which combine memory foam and innerspring technologies.

Memory foam mattresses are made from Visco elastic and can provide both comfort and support without the aid of coils. Memory foam has the added benefits of being able to conform to a sleeper’s body and respond to their body temperature by softening under warmth. Memory foam is also great at reducing motion transfer between sleep partners so when one person tosses the other doesn’t turn.

Latex mattresses have been growing in popularity over the last few years as they have declined in price. Its unique construction allows latex to instantly respond to the body and provide a high level of comfort while helping to promote proper spinal alignment. These qualities allow latex foam to act as a support system in lieu of a traditional innerspring. Latex mattresses are great for allergy sufferers because they are hypo-allergenic and do not accumulate dust mites. Latex mattresses are also known for staying cool and for having excellent breathability.

Waterbeds became wildly popular in the ’70s and ’80s and although they look like a conventional mattress, they have an inner bladder of water, or water filled tubes for support. Waterbeds became popular because they offered conforming support at a time that traditional mattresses were much firmer. Although waterbeds were once the preferred sleep system for people with joint and back problems, modern technologies such as memory foam and latex have, for the most part, made waterbeds a thing of the past.
