Memory Foam Mattresses have been providing sleepers with the ultimate in luxurious nighttime comfort and support for more than 25 years. Although innersprings lead all other mattresses types in terms of total sales, the popularity of Memory Foam mattresses continues to steadily grow.

About Memory Foam

Memory Foam is a synthetic material developed in the 1970s for NASA by scientists at the Ames Research Center. Originally called “temper foam” by its inventors, Memory Foam was initially used for seat padding in space vehicles to provide astronauts with some relief from the effects of gravity during mission launches and landings. That same gravitational relief can now be enjoyed by everyone in the form of Memory Foam mattresses.

Scientifically known as “Visco Foam”, Memory Foam differs from other types of mattress materials in that it is a viscoelastic polyurethane substance. When a person lies on a Memory Foam mattress, heat given off by the body causes the low viscosity material to soften and mold to the sleeper’s natural contours. Because Memory Foam also has elastic characteristics, the mattress will return to its original shape after pressure has been reduced or removed, such as when a sleeper arises or shifts sleeping positions.

NASA released Memory Foam technology in the early 1980s, making it available to the public for the first time. Several new uses were soon found for the versatile material, including furniture upholstery, sports and military helmet cushioning, boot and shoe liners, horseback saddle padding, bicycle seat cushions and foam mattresses, which became an immediate success.

In the early ‘90s, Sweden’s Fagerdala World Foams introduced a mattress made from what is now called Memory Foam to the Swedish people. The revolutionary new sleep system was met with much enthusiasm. By 1992, Tempur-Pedic® began selling its Memory Foam mattresses in North America with the same positive results.

Prompted by Tempur-Pedic®’s success, several other companies began to manufacture Memory Foam mattresses. As more and more uses were found for the Memory Foam material, prices began to fall, making Memory Foam mattresses affordable and available to the general population. In addition to Tempur-Pedic®, Sit ‘n Sleep’s extensive inventory of Memory Foam Mattresses includes well-known brands such as Sealy, Beautyrest, Serta, and more.

Benefits of Memory Foam Mattresses

As Memory Foam’s heat transferring properties absorb the natural warmth given off by the human body, the mattress softens and molds itself to the sleeper’s natural contours, providing a sense of security and well-being. Because his or her weight is evenly distributed, circulation and blood flow are improved, pressure on the spine is reduced and the neck, shoulder back, knees and joints are comfortably and properly supported.  The result is an unbelievably sound night’s sleep that leaves the sleeper relaxed and refreshed in the morning.

Innerspring mattresses are ideal breeding grounds for dust mites, and may be home to literally hundreds of thousands, or even millions of the tiny creatures. Memory Foam mattresses, however, are resistant to mites, as well as mold, bed bugs, and many types of allergens, which make them an excellent choice for asthmatics and allergy sufferers.

Another advantage of Memory Foam as a mattress material is its inherent low resilience, which means it absorbs motion transfer. Unlike coil spring or hybrid mattresses, a sleeper with a restless partner won’t be disturbed or awakened by his or her nocturnal tossing and turning while sleeping on a Memory Foam mattress.

Choosing a Memory Foam Mattress

A recent innovation in Memory Foam’s evolution is the combination of gel particles with visco-elastic foam. Called Gel Memory Foam, the hybrid material reduces trapped body heat for a cooler sleeping experience, lessens the time it takes to return to its original shape after having been compressed and makes the mattress feel even softer than regular Memory Foam. Being heavier than original Memory Foam, Gel Memory Foam offers added firmness and support for sleepers with back, neck or joint ailments.

Because they are flexible and durable, Memory Foam mattresses are an outstanding choice for adjustable beds. Adjustable bed platforms, which come in all sizes from Twin to California King, continue to gain in popularity. More and more people are discovering the benefits of pairing a Memory Foam mattress with a bed that can be electronically adjusted to the sleeper’s ideal sleeping position for a really incredible night’s sleep.

When shopping for a Memory Foam mattress, the foam’s density and thickness are important factors to consider. Measured in pounds, a mattress with a density of less than four pounds may begin to show wear sooner than heavier density mattresses. Look for a mattress with a density factor of at least four to five pounds.

Memory Foam mattresses come in thicknesses of six to fourteen inches. An eight-inch thick Memory Foam mattress is generally recommended for back sleepers and lighter weight people. Side sleepers and larger individuals, however, tend to prefer thicknesses of ten to twelve inches.

Keep in mind when selecting a Memory Foam mattress for an adjustable bed that although mattresses over ten inches thick will work in adjustable beds, the range of motion may be restricted.
