Can't Sleep With Your Partner? Try These Tips.

sleep better with your partner

Trouble sleeping next to your partner? You’re not alone. About 26% of people  say they get better sleep when they sleep alone compared to sleeping with their partner. Different schedules, temperature preferences, snoring, tossing and turning, and many other factors can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep next to someone else. However, that doesn’t always have to be the case.Try these tips to get harmonious sleep with your partner.

Address Snoring Together

Let’s start with the (very loud) elephant in the room. Over half of the population is guilty of snoring, so chances are that you’ve been there before. And while there may be only one partner to blame, it’s important to deal with the issue together. If you’re the snorer, get evaluated by a medical professional to see what the underlying cause is. If you’re the snorer’s partner, encourage them to get checked out and go with them on their visit.

Your support might be just what they need to finally get help. If it’s not a “so loud you wake yourself up” snore, try to drown it out with a sound machine or white noise app on your smartphone – there are literally hundreds of them. Sleep soundly to ocean waves or the rainforest instead of the not-so-soothing sound of someone snoring.

Get Some Earplugs

Whether you’re dealing with your partner’s snoring or your neighbor’s unnecessarily loud TV, earplugs might help your issues. Light sleepers should especially consider getting earplugs to block the noises that easily wake them up.

Stagger your Bedtimes

Be intentional about your individual sleep schedule. If your partner is the one who is keeping you up, try going to sleep earlier than them. Then have your partner come to bed when you’re in a deep sleep. This will hopefully prevent your significant other from keeping you awake.

Put on Headphones

Speaking of staggering bedtimes, if your partner is ready for bed but you want to stay up and watch TV, try putting on headphones. As a result, your partner can sleep soundly while you enjoy your favorite show. Now they even make headphones and earbuds specifically for bedtime.

End the Blanket Tug-O-War

Do you wake up shivering because your sheets have “magically” disappeared? Stop playing tug-of-war with your sheet-hogging partner and just get separate blankets. You can share a layer or two but make sure you always have your own should they decide to burrito up!

Health Magazine talked to sleep expert Dr. Breus about using separate blankets to minimize disturbances caused by a restless bedmate. He suggested layering yourself in separate blankets to cut down on motion from tossing, turning, and even kicking.  If your partner is surrounded by their own blankets, less chance for that karate kick to reach you!

Find the Right Mattress

Mattresses with individually wrapped pocketed springs, like hybrid mattresses, are great for couples. Pocketed springs contour to your bodyweight independent of each other. Because they don’t completely affect their surrounding springs, you’ll be able to move around in bed without waking your partner. If you toss and turn at night, pocketed springs can help prevent your partner from waking up.

Look into An Adjustable Base

You and your significant other don’t need to compromise on your preferred sleeping positions. With an adjustable base, you can each choose the most comfortable position for your individual needs. You may need to get two twin bases and put them together, but the results could be worth it. Adjustable beds come with plenty of benefits. Furthermore, they can help with snoring which, in turn, can help with your relationship. Sit ‘n Sleep is a flagship retailer for SmartLife mattress systems, which offer a superior experience even beyond that of Sleep Number mattresses.

Keep Cool

Sleeping next to a human furnace? If your partner radiates body heat, there are some simple steps you can take to make sleeping more comfortable. An easy and affordable way to enjoy the benefits of sleeping on a cool surface while extending the life of your mattress and pillows is to upgrade your bedding with a PureCare™ FRIO® Cool Pack Kit . Available online and all Sit ‘n Sleep outlets, the kit comes with PureCare’s Antimicrobial Silver Total Encasement mattress cover, a PureCare FRIO 5-sided mattress liner, and PureCare FRIO Pillow Protectors. The fabric, which is woven from fibers infused with crushed minerals keeps heat from accumulating by drawing it away from the sleeping surface 5 times faster than polyester liners. The result is a sleeping surface that’s noticeably cooler than mattresses with conventional covers.

Another option to help hot sleepers cool off is a new mattress that features cooling technology.  The Hybrid Infinity Cool Standard dissipates heat as you sleep while the Infinity Cool Gel layer keeps the mattress and you cooler through the night.

TEMPUR-pedic®’s new TEMPUR-ProBreeze® Medium Hybrid Mattress has an internal layer which continually absorbs excess body heat and maximizes airflow throughout the night. Heat and humidity that would otherwise be trapped under the bedclothes as you sleep, making it 3°F cooler than ordinary mattresses. It comes with TEMPUR’s removable and washable SmartClimate® Dual Cover System that feels cool to the touch from the moment your body touches its surface.

Get Separate Beds If You Must

If you and your partner have tried everything and still can’t make it work, consider separate beds. A growing, though misleading, topic is the trend of sleep divorce. This is where a couple will sleep in separate beds, or even separate rooms, to get a good night’s sleep. But don’t let the name fool you. Some say a sleep divorce can actually improve your relationship. After all, when you’re well-rested, you’re less irritable and less likely to be hostile toward your partner.

If you’ve explored all your options and can’t find a workable solution, don’t be ashamed if you decide to sleep in different beds. Maintaining a healthy and loving relationship with your partner is what matters most.
