Tips For Helping Children Fall Asleep and Stay Asleep

A good starting point is to establish a relaxing nighttime routine for your child. This is especially important for helping very young children fall asleep. The nightly routine might include taking a bath, putting on a favorite pair of pajamas, brushing teeth and possibly reading them a bedtime story after they’re under the covers and snugly tucked in. Most children find a regular routine calming and comforting, since they’re aware of what’s about to happen. It probably won’t take long before the child automatically starts to become sleepy as the nightly routine begins. Below are more tips for helping your child fall asleep.

  • Turn Off Electronic Devices at Least an Hour Before Bedtime. The blue light emitted by a TV, tablet, smartphone and similar devices interfere with the body’s production of melatonin, which is a naturally occurring substance that helps regulate the human body’s sleeping and waking cycles. Most people become naturally sleepy when their melatonin levels are highest. As little as half an hour’s TV or other screen time close to bedtime, however, can be enough to keep your child awake for an extra 2 hours or more. Phones, tablets and video game consoles should be kept out of the child’s bedroom during the night.
  • Create an Environment Conducive to Sleep. Cortisol, like melatonin, is another naturally occurring hormone, but has the opposite effect. Called the “stress hormone”, cortisol helps the body respond to danger or stressful situations. When cortisol levels are high, the body becomes alert, so it’s likely that your child will experience difficulty falling asleep. Be sure their activities before bedtime are calm, the bedroom lights are dim and noise levels are low to help avoid excess cortisol production than can keep your child – and you – awake.
  • Keep the Room Comfortable but Cool. Just as a bedroom where the light is too bright or the noise level is too high affects a child’s ability to fall asleep, so does a room that’s overly warm. Avoid using too many blankets and covers when you tuck him or her in and lower the thermostat setting slightly shortly before bedtime.
  • Be Sure Your Child Eats Properly. Children need to be fed a nutritious and satisfying evening meal, but it needs to be at the right time. Eating too early will leave the child hungry and overly alert when it’s time to go to bed. Eating a meal late in the evening can make the child uncomfortable and unable to fall sleep. Coffee, tea, colas and chocolate all contain caffeine, and should be avoided in late afternoon and evening hours. A good breakfast in the morning will help reset a young body’s clock to the awake cycle for the day.
  • Alleviate Nighttime Fears. Some younger children have a fear of the dark or being alone that makes them reluctant to go to bed or fall asleep.. Praise them for being brave while assuring them that their bedroom is a safe and secure place. Avoid computer games, TV shows and movies that are violent or scary. A favorite stuffed animal may comfort and reassure a child, although too many toys can be a distraction that can keep them from falling asleep. A low level nightlight in the room helps to make some kids fell safer.
  • Be Aware of Possible Sleep Disorders. If your child continues to have problems falling or staying asleep or regularly experiences nightmares, it may be a sleep disorder keeping them awake that needs professional treatment. Consult with the child’s pediatrician if the problem persists for more than a few weeks or if interferes with his or her daily life, including school and social interactions.

Choose the Right Sleep System.

When and How to Wash Your Pillows

Most people wash sheets and pillowcases once a week, but often put off laundering their pillows. Although somewhat inconvenient, failing to regularly wash your bed pillows can be a huge mistake.

Pillows can harbor all sorts of nasty things, including dust, perspiration, saliva, dirt, dead skin, mold, dust mites and other tiny insects. Amazingly, these unwanted intruders can cause the pillow to double in weight over time. If ignored and left untended, they will cause the pillow’s fill material to break down, and the pillow will no longer provide the support needed for a good night’s rest.

Continuing to sleep on a pillow without it being washed at least every few months can also have a negative impact on your health by causing illness or triggering allergic reactions. If you wake up with watery eyes and sneezing, failure to regularly launder your pillows may be the cause. People who live in warm, damp climates should wash their pillows frequently to keep them fresh, sanitary and comfortable for sleeping.

Tips for Washing and Drying Pillows

Most synthetic and down-filled pillows can be machine-washed and dried, although there are some that should be dry cleaned only. Regardless of the fill material, read the manufacturer’s instructions on the care label to confirm that machine washing is OK.

Before washing a pillow with a synthetic filling, fold it in half. If it doesn’t immediately bounce back into shape, the filling inside has been broken down and will no longer adequately support the sleeper’s head and neck.. Here are a few tips for hassle-free ways to keep your pillows clean and comfortable:

  • After confirming the pillow can be machine washed and dried, place the pillow or pillows into the washer. Washing two pillows at the same time will balance the load and allow better circulation of the water and detergent. The agitators in top-loading machines can be rough on pillows and shorten their useful lives, so set the machine on its “gentle” cycle for the shortest possible time. As an alternative, consider taking the pillows to a laundromat and use their front-loading equipment when they need laundering.
  • Set the water temperature selector on hot. It takes a water temperature of 140°F or higher to kill the dust mites and other creepy critters that might be inside.
  • Add a small amount a mild, low suds liquid detergent such as Woolite. Avoid powdered detergents, which can leave excessive residue. Fragrance free soaps are recommended.
  • Start the washing machine. Run the pillows through the machine’s rinse cycle at least twice. This will make sure all soap and dirt have been removed. Detergent that hasn’t been completely rinsed from the pillow will leave a sticky residue that can cause the filling to clump. It’s also a good idea to run the pillows through an extra spin cycle to remove as much moisture as possible.
  • Dry the pillows according to the instructions on the care label. Assuming machine drying is OK, place the pillows in the dryer along with a few tennis balls or wool dryer balls. This will give them some extra fluff and also help to break up clumps. It’s important that the pillow or pillows are thoroughly dried. A pillow that’s put back into use while it’s still even slightly damp can result in mildew, dust mites and bacteria returning.

Special Washing Instructions for Pillows With Various Filling Types

  • Down or Feather Pillows. Although it will take longer, use the dryer’s no-heat setting to avoid the feathers being singed and leaving the pillow with an unpleasant odor.
  • Polyester Pillows. Wash with warm (not hot) water, with the machine set on its gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent very sparingly – about one tablespoon of liquid soap is plenty.
  • Buckwheat Hull Fillings. Washing buckwheat hull pillows will ruin them. Open the zippered end of the pillowcase and empty the hulls onto a cookie sheet or into a large, shallow bowl. Setting the cookie sheet or bowl with the hulls in the sun will eliminate odors. Wash the cover in cold water using a mild detergent.
  • Memory Foam and Latex Pillows. Unfortunately, neither of these pillow types can be washed, nor should they be steam cleaned. Remove visible stains by blotting them with a damp (not wet) cloth and allow the pillow to air dry, but keep them away from direct sunlight. Occasionally vacuuming a latex pillow followed by running it through a dryer on the “no heat” setting will remove much of the accumulated dirt and grime. The best way to keep a latex pillow clean and sanitary is to use a machine washable protective pillow cover.

Regardless of a pillow’s filling type, most sleep experts recommend using zippered pillow protectors to extend their useful lives. Experts also agree that the rule of thumb for replacing pillows is every one to two years, although some will last longer. And even if you think that a formal New Years Resolution is kinda clichéd, it’s still important to set some goals and figure out how you can improve and grow in the new year.   1. Drink more water: While there’s no set formula for how much water a person should drink, it’s important to stay hydrated. For some people, this means 8 cups a day, but other people (especially people who are very active or who live in a dry climate) may need a lot more. According to the Mayo Clinic, you’re probably drinking enough if you don’t usually feel thirsty and your urine is light yellow or colorless.
  2. Aim for 7-8 hours a night: It’s no secret that the majority of people get way less sleep than they should. With everything that you have on your plate, it can be hard to prioritize sleep. But getting enough sleep – experts recommend around 7-9 hours each day – is actually really important! Many health problems have been associated with sleep deprivation, including psychological problems, heart disease, obesity/weight gain, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
  3. Meditate every day: Meditation has been shown to have so many positive effects on the body and mind, such as reducing blood pressure, lowering anxiety, and improving your focus, memory and attention. The best thing is you can get all of these benefits with only minutes a day; there’s no need to spend hours at a time.
  4. Schedule regular self care: If you struggle with finding time to squeeze in your self care, actually put it on the calendar or your “to-do” list. Make it a priority by finding the time in your busy schedule, even if it’s only 5 minutes to squeeze in a meditation session.
  5. Take time off from social media: While social media does have it’s benefits, and for some people is essential for work, spending too much time on it has been linked to stress, anxiety and depression. Give yourself an hour off a day, or even consider a regular tech-free Sunday.
  6. Look at your triggers and signs of stress: It’s no secret that stress is a killer. High stress levels have been associated with many health conditions, like tension headaches, heart disease, high blood sugar levels, and other hormonal abnormalities. Next year, resolve to take a look at what triggers your stress and the effects that it has on your body. This can help you find ways to release that stress and minimize the effects that it has on your body.
  7. Cut out toxic people: Everyone has at least one of those people in their life. You know the one: they make snide comments, are unsupportive, or just make you feel bad about yourself. Schedule a check-up or physical exam with your primary care doctor and catch up with your recommended preventive care screenings. Even if you are young and healthy, it’s important to see your doctor regularly to find health problems early and treat them before they become serious.
  9. Look at sleep hygiene: In addition to getting more sleep, it’s important to work on getting better quality sleep. Improving your sleep hygiene can help you get more productive and restful sleep. The National Sleep Foundation suggests limiting caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, keeping your bedroom cool and dark, and establishing a regular and relaxing bedtime routine.
  10. Take up yoga: Yoga isn’t just a trendy exercise class for housewives or millenials. It’s an ancient practice with many real health benefits, such as reducing stress, increasing flexibility, building muscle strength, and increasing blood flow.   11. Take a nap: While taking too long of a nap may not be beneficial (because it keeps you from sleeping well at night), taking the occasional 30-minute power nap can help give you more energy to get through the rest of your day, particularly if you didn’t sleep well the night before.

Taking a few minutes each day to think about what you are thankful for, and what positive things have happened that day can improve both your physical and psychological health.   13. Let go of the diet: Many people start the new year with a new diet and a new and healthy way of eating. This year, let go of the diet. Instead, focus on eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins Try and cut back on the amount of sugar and processed foods that you eat. Look for healthy lifestyle habits you can build long-term, instead of the fad diet.
  14. Spend more time outdoors: It’s easy to spend a lot, if not all of your time indoors. Between work, commuting, family obligations and responsibilities at home, it’s easy to forget to get outside sometimes!
